Where She Dance
Our Fall Matinees feature two ballets:
Where She Danced shows the dances that Doris Humphrey choreographed and performed in her earliest years – in Oak Park and with a company called Denishawn in Los Angeles. Doris Humphrey is a native Oak Parker born in 1895 and ranks, in the dance world, as high as Frank Lloyd Wright and Ernest Hemingway do in their respective fields. The dances are presented in careful reconstructions from original documents and as handed down over generations; there is a narration that includes video projections of wonderful, historical photos. This is a way for our young dancers to experience dance history with the excitement of live performance.
The second part of the matinee will allow our boys to shine; Peter Pan, adapted as a ballet by Stephanie Clemens from Barrie’s original story, tells the fantastic tale of a boy who does not want to grow up. Our ballet presents the story as what might be Wendy’s dream that takes us to Never Never Land, a place filled with fantasy and drama – with Captain Hook and his rowdy Pirates, beautiful Mermaids, and Tiger Lily as the Queen of the Woodland Flowers, with some very interesting plants!!
